Chirmi is a Rajasthani language word for Abrus precatorius / Jequirity. Botanical name: Abrus precatorius Linn. Family: Fabaceae (Papilionaceae) Classical name: Gunja Sanskrit names: Vanavasini, Kakachinja, Rakthika, Krishnala, Durmeha, Bahurvirya .

Better known as Rosary pea, Crab's eye and popularly known as Gunja in Hindi, Abrus precatorius is a slender, climbing herb with peculiar bright red seeds. It can be found growing over shrubs, trees and hedges. 

Chirmi seeds are found in the forests of Aravali Hills, Rajasthan. They symbolize Goddess Lakshmi and it is said that the wearer is blessed with wealth, prosperity and harmony. It is commonly said that the beads select their owner and will never stay with an unlucky person.

Gunja (Abrus precatorius Linn.), known as Indian liquorice, is reputed as one of the world's most deadly but most beautiful seed belonging to the family Fabaceae, characterised under the Upavisha (semi-poisonous drugs) and used extensively in various Ayurvedic formulations with great therapeutic significance. 

The purified Abrus is a nerve stimulant and is used in vata disorders like joint pains and paralysis. The paste of seeds is applied locally in alopecia and skin diseases. It has also been mentioned as a contraceptive in Ayurveda. 

Chirmi or Gunja Seed for Hair Growth:

Mix 2 tsp of gunjadi oil with 1 teaspoon each of Brahmi and triphala powders. Add a few drops of coconut oil to make a herbal hair lepa (hair pack). Apply this pack 3-4 times a week. Wash off after 30 - 40 minutes with lukewarm water and shampoo afterwards. 

CAUTION: 

The Chirmi or Gunja plant is best known for its seeds, which are used as beads and in percussion instruments, and which are toxic because of the presence of abrin. Ingestion of a single seed, well chewed, can be fatal to both adults and children. The plant is native to Asia and Australia. 

Gunja is one among the upavisha, which is an irritant poison by modern concept. In Kriyakoumudi text bharjita tankana mentioned as an antidote for Gunja seed poisoning.
