pomegranate

Pomegranates with high concentrations of polyphenols are centuries-old fruit that have been utilized since ancient times and recently recognized as super fruits in early 2000s for their nutritional and medicinal properties. Pomegranates are low in calories and fat but high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Pomegranate increases immunity and it has ample amount of nutrients that can significantly decrease stress-induced anxiety-like behavior.

As per a study conducted by the Queen Margaret University of United Kingdom, people who consumed 500ml of pomegranate juice daily had lower levels of cortisol hormones in their body. 60 volunteers were asked to drink 500ml per day pomegranate juice over a two-week period.

The research concluded that daily consumption of Pomegranate Juice caused a significant reduction in the level of cortisol (the stress hormone) in saliva and a significant reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in all volunteers.

Results also suggest that pomegranate may reduce blood pressure and possibly prevent hypertension too. Pomegranate is known to reduce oxidative stress from the body and also help lower psychological stress. Many studies found out that pomegranate extract supplementation with diet shows anti-inflammatory properties and significantly reduced oxidative stress in brain.

A study also states that pomegranate extract (40%, m/m) improved depression and anxiety in a postmenopausal model with ovariectomized rats.  Compounds in pomegranate may help protect brain health and prevent Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
