AYURVEDIC JATAMANSI HERB

Spikenard, popularly known as Jatamansi in India, has been used extensively in Ayurveda for ages. According to Ayurveda, Jatamansi helps in preventing wrinkles due to its Snigdha (oily) nature.

This is because hair fall is mainly due to an aggravated Vata dosha in the body. Jatamansi or its oil acts on hair fall by balancing Tridosha (Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha). 

Jatamansi oil also helps darken the hair naturally, eventually making it a cure for premature greying. Applying jatamansi oil at regular intervals brings in noticeable changes to your hair. First, it darkens the hair since a few compounds are natural dyeing agents.

Due to its soothing effect on your body, it is also used to treat anxiety. 

Swallow it with honey once or twice a day after taking food. Continue for 1-2 months to control the symptoms of anxiety.

It also calms down the brain and manages anxiety as well as insomnia. Jatamansi powdered rhizome at a dose of 4 g with milk 3 times a day after food for 1 month was used in a small study evaluating effects on primary insomnia. 

Jatamansi might be beneficial for people suffering from depression because of sleep disturbances. However, you must seek advice of a psychiatrist for better advice and prescription for depression. 

JATAMANSI HERBAL TEA RECIPE 

A powder is prepared from the dried Jatamansi roots and it can be consumed daily with honey or water. Adults can consume 1-3 grams of Jatamansi powder, twice daily. 

Boil water and take it out in a cup. To this, add two teaspoons of Jatamansi powder to make a simple herbal tea.

JATAMANSI IS FOUND IN FOLLOWING REGIONS 

Bhutan, China, India (Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh; Jammu & Kashmir, Sikkim, Uttarakhand) and Nepal.

Valeriana jatamansi Jones (Syn. V. wallichii DC.) is commonly known as Indian Valerian, Muskbala, Sugandhbala (Hindi) and Tagar (Sanskrit). 

Indian valerian is a wild herb distributed in subtropical and temperate Himalaya up to an altitude of 3000 meters and between 1500 to 1800 meters in Khasi and Jaintia hills.

CAUTION 

Jatamansi root formulations are generally safe and non-toxic when used in an appropriate dosage. However, people suffering from hypersensitivity should avoid taking this herb as it may cause skin irritation, breathing difficulty, nausea, and vomiting
