Gayatri Mantra is generally known as a universal prayer for healing, strength, creativity, and abundance. It is believed that whoever chants the Gayatri Mantra, he/she enables their higher intellectual energies. Gayatri mantra is extracted from the 10th verse of Hymn 62 in Book III of the Rig Veda. The Gayatri Mantra can be used as a healing tool. While the best time to chant it is considered to be at dawn, sunrise or early morning, some people prefer to do so in the evening. 

Gayatri mantra has 24 letters including, tat, sa, vi, tur, va, re, ni, yam, bhar, go, de, va, sya, dhi, ma, hi, dhi, yo, yo, nah, pra, cho, da, and yat. 

ओम भूर्भव: स्व: तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं । भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो न: प्रचोदयात्।।

Gayatri is known as Panchamukhi, meaning she has five faces, so while chanting the Mantra; one should pause after every part. 

1. First Part: Om 

2. Second Part: Bhur bhuvah svah 

3. Third Part: Tat savitur varenyam 

4. Fourth Part: Bhargo devasya dheemahi 

5. Last Part: Dhiyo yo nah prachodayaaat. 

Word for Word Meaning of the Gayatri Mantra 

Aum = Brahma ; 

bhoor = embodiment of vital spiritual energy(pran) ; 

bhuwah = destroyer of sufferings ; 

swaha = embodiment of happiness ; 

tat = that ; 

savitur = bright like sun ; 

varenyam = best choicest ; 

bhargo = destroyer of sins ; 

devasya = divine ; 

These first nine words describe the glory of God 

dheemahi = may imbibe ; pertains to meditation 

dhiyo = intellect ; 

yo = who ; 

naha = our ; 

prachodayat = may inspire! "dhiyo yo na prachodayat" is a prayer to God 

In simple form it means “O, Divine mother, our hearts are loaded up with darkness. Kindly make this darkness distant from us and advance brightening inside us.”

Gayatri Mantra is a complete concept that embodies three core spiritual growth values –Stotra (Singing praise of GOD), Prathna (Prayer) and Dhyana (Meditation). Gayatri Mantra is the most powerful Mantra in the universe as per religious texts and it pleases Lord Shiva. He who meditates on Gayatri, meditates on Lord Vishnu. A man can repeat Gayatri mentally in all states while lying, sitting, walking etc.
